Some of the music critics had been particularly harsh on the soundtrack of “Rock On”. To the untrained ear, it didn’t seem bad at all on celluloid. Though the tunes may not become memorable, the music carries the plot and the rawness of Farhan Akhtar’s vocals somehow matches the rawness of his band as it strives to break into the big times.

But it’s not Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy’s efforts alone that turn “Rock On” into an honest, good film. The concept of the movie and its execution, and the realistic characters and their quietly powerful performances make significant contribution too.

A film about the life and times of a boy band seemingly does not have mass appeal, but its message is for everybody – it’s never too late to live your dream. For all those with unfulfilled dreams and ambitions lost in time, “Rock On” will impart hope.

The plot moves back and forth in time as we learn what Aditya (Farhan Akhtar), Joe (Arjun Rampal), Rob (Luke Kenny) and K.D. (Purab Kohli) do, and did 10 years ago. Back in time they were members of Magik, a rock bank which splits soon after winning a ticket to possible success.

So bitter is the parting that they head in different directions, not to meet till 10 years later. By now, Aditya is an investment banker, Joe a part time music teacher, K.D. dabbles in the family jewellery business while Rob works as a session musician.

Aditya is the most affluent of the lot but beneath all that looks ideal, he’s a tormented soul. Wife Saakshi (Prachi Desai) accidentally discovers the reason for his aloofness and arranges a meeting with his estranged band members. After some initial awkwardness and hesitation, the four set off again, from where they left.

After his highly dramatic “Aryan”, writer-director Abhishek Kapoor keeps it simple and mature here. For a story that presents many moments for possible melodrama, “Rock On” is understated, making it true to life and identifiable. Not surprisingly, one can notice traces of the Farhan Akhtar style of filmmaking, especially in the way male bonding, twisted relationships and complex emotions are handled, and attention is paid to detail ensuring nothing remains disconnected. The reunion scenes among the band members as well as Aditya’s meeting with an ex girlfriend are particularly treated with intense care.

For most part, “Rock On” wears a golden hue and is beautifully shot, making it pleasing to the eye as well. In fact, all the visual elements are good-looking. The rock concert sequences are created convincingly, credit for which also goes to the cast which lives its roles rather skillfully.

Farhan Akhtar makes an impressive debut as an actor. Though not as explosive as his directorial debut, his foray into acting works just as well. As Magik’s lead vocalist as well as an investment banker, Farhan is controlled, but highly affective. True to his self he pays a lot of attention to his on stage rock musician act, and comes across quite like one.

The movie’s other debutant, Prachi Desai, makes a mark too. Her transition from the sari-clad Bani of “Kasamh Se” to the beautifully syled Sakshi of “Rock On” is refreshing.

Shahana Goswani, as Joe’s ever slogging wife Debbie, has a longer role though, and does very well too. Largely unnoticed in her earlier three films, it will be difficult, and unfair, not to recognise her henceforth. Along with Farhan Akhtar, hers is the best performance of the movie.

Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny and Purab Kohli do complete justice to their parts, which often get demanding. Their effortless acting is supported by good dialogues and some witty lines.

Barring its slow pace, everything about "Rock On" is spot on, but is Bollywood and the audience in general ready for a full-fledged film set against the backdrop of a rock band?

Maybe not, going by what’s working these days.

But Gen Next, at whom the movie is primarily aimed, must do its bit to appalud and welcome all positive attempts to take Hindi cinema forward, especially if the attempt is as sincere and commendable as “Rock On”.

MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. started a trend of sorts. Gangsters with a heart of gold acting as modern-day Robinhoods. Robbing the notorious rich and helping the oppressed poor.

Writer turned debutante director Sachin Yardi borrows a leaf from MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. and presents a tale that not only talks of Robinhoods, but also makes a scathing attack at news reporting hitting an all-time low [anything for TRPs], makes digs at Ekta Kapoor and her serials, also looks at the underworld-builder-cops nexus.

The story of three losers attaining power overnight makes for interesting viewing. But the problem is, C KKOMPANY lacks consistency. The comedy is truly hilarious at places, but there're times when you sit motionless, not reacting to the on-screen antics. If the first hour is a joyous ride, the second hour is akin to driving on a road full of potholes. The climax is also a letdown [in the mela], although the end sequence -- C KKOMPANY is now a movement -- was the right way to conclude the film.

All said, C KKOMPANY had the germs of being a cool entertainer, but it ends up being a one-time average watch.

C KKOMPANY is about three individuals, all living in the 'C' Wing of a middle class housing society: Akshay [Tusshar] is a crime reporter, Mr. Joshi [Anupam Kher] is a retired accountant trying to deal with his ungrateful son and Lambodar [Rajpal Yadav] is at loggerheads with his wife over his job. These three friends share their respective plight with one another and find solace in each other's company.

On one occasion, they play a harmless prank to tackle their problems. One thing leads to another and before they realize, the incident becomes big news. But things don't stop there. They put their new founded fame to good use and this in turn triggers off a series of incidents, which propel them to such heights that the three become the talk of the nation.

That Sachin Yardi has a flair for comedy was more than evident when he penned the thoroughly entertaining KYAA KOOL HAI HUM. C KKOMPANY also boasts of humour-laden sequences that keep you in splits at several points.

But keeping the humour alive from start to end is not everyone's cup of tea. Yardi's humour works till the beginning of the second hour, but things stagnate thereafter. Things get repetitive. There's not much movement in the story and the comic scenes also range from enjoyable to avoidable.

Music is quite okay, but the songs -- barring the Sanjay Dutt track at the outset -- show up without valid situations. The Tusshar-Celina track, although well shot, comes up from nowhere. Cinematography is alright.

C KKOMPANY gets its glory because of its three protagonists. Tusshar is only climbing the ladder with every film. He's excellent. Anupam Kher proves yet again that he's amongst the best in the business. Rajpla Yadav is efficient too.

Mithun Chakraborty is in command after a long time. The veteran is superb. Vinay Apte and Dilip Prabhavalkar do complete justice to their respective roles. Raima Sen is pleasant. Karan Johar, Mahesh Bhatt and Ekta Kapoor's appearances give the film that extra sheen.

On the whole, C KKOMPANY is funny in parts, not in totality. An ordinary fare!

A 24 year old Italian tourist attempted suicide while having his holiday in Australia. He was rushed to the Mackay Base Hospital while in a coma. The doctors found that he swallowed a large amount of the poisonous substance ethylene glycol, found in antifreeze, which can cause death. He was then treated immediately with pharmaceutical-grade pure alcohol, which works as an antidote to the poison. Unfortunately the antidote supply in the hospital is not enough to cure the man.

Pure alcohol is often given in treating such cases because it can inhibit the toxic effects of ethylene glycol. While new supplies won't be coming anytime soon, doctors have to think of a way to find replacement. Luckily for the Italian man, supplies is not too far away. The doctors starts feeding him with Vodka through a drip for 3 days!

"The patient was drip-fed about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit," Dr Todd Fraser said in a statement. "The hospital's administrators were also very understanding when we explained our reasons for buying a case of vodka." Medical staff said the patient had made a full recovery, and the hangover had worn off by the time he woke up. He spent 20 days in hospital before being discharged.

Sunday School Lesson

It’s The Dog’s Fault, I Swear!

A young man has a great date planned with a hot chick, unfortunately he’s also got a bad case of gas. Upon arriving at the girl’s house to pick her up, he meets the parents and waits for her in the living room while she finishes getting ready.

At this point his stomach is turning and he’s doing the best he can to hold his gas. This is some serious stuff too, beer and beef burrito farts - the stuff dreams are made of. Luckily, just before he was about to explode Spot, the family dog, jumps on his lap as he sits on the couch. He figures it’s safe to let out alittle bit of the pressure and and if anyone notices they’ll think that the dog did it.

He farts, and the woman yells, “Spot, get down from there.” The guy thinks to himself, “Thank God! They think the dog did it.” Seizing the opportunity, he lets out another fart and the woman, again, yells for the dog to get down.

This goes on for a few more farts when, finally, the woman yells loudly, “Dammit Spot, get down before he shits on you!”

Pleasing a woman

A new, special kind of store just opened up in a Manhatten shopping center. This store sells husbands, yes that’s right - women can browse men from floors of choices.

Actually, there are 6 floors of men, and with an increase in the floor level bringing an positive attributes… a nifty setup - with a catch. As you open the door to any floor, you may choose a man from that floor but if you go up, you cannot go back down except to exit the building. Interesting, right?

Hungry Cannibals

Two hungry cannibals are walking through the woods and find a man who recently died. Seizing the opportunity, one cannibal says to the other, “Check this out! You start at the feet and I’ll start at the head and we’ll meet in the middle!”

Expecting A Baby

For weeks a six-year old lad kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house.

That Monkey Will Eat Anything

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey, sits down and orders a drink. Shortly after, the monkey starts jumping all over the place and acting crazy. The monkey grabs some olives off the bar and eats them… grabs some sliced limes and eats them… then jumps up on the pool table, grabs the cue ball, sticks it in his mouth and swallows it whole.

The bartender screams at the guy, “Did you see what your monkey just did?” “No, what?” says the guy. “He just ate the cue ball off my pool table - whole!” says the bartender. “Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me, he eats everything in sight. Quite an appetite. I’ll pay for the cue ball and other things he ate.” He the finishes his drink, pays the bill, and leaves. Two weeks later he’s back at the same bar again, monkey by his side as usual. He orders a drink and the monkey starts running around the bar again.

While the man is drinking, the monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his butt, pulls it out, and eats it. The bartender is disgusted. “Did you see what your monkey did?” “What this time?” asks the patron. “Well, he stuck a cherry up his butt, then pulled it out and ate it!” says the barkeeper.

“Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me,” replies the patron. “He still eats everything in sight, but ever since he ate that damn cue ball he measures it first!”

A curious boy

A four year old little boy was at the doctor’s office with his mother in the waiting room when he spotted a pregnant lady on the other side of the room. Having nothing better to do, he walk over to her and inquisitively asks “Why is your stomach so big?”

She replied, “Im having a baby.” With big eyes, he replied, “Is the baby in your stomach?” She said, “He sure is.”

Then the little boy, with a puzzled look on his face, asked yet another question, “Is it a good baby?” She said, “Oh, yes. It’s a real good baby.” At this point the woman is thinking the little boy is incredibly cute and looks foward to what he has to say next…

Can someone build a career in Media?
Media today is improving; actually it almost booming. In the past ten years it is the only field which has sustained economically. The growing numbers of Nepali channels are the result of it.

Can you please give hints about your future plans?
I haven't planed for my future, I hope I will know it in future. Actually I wanna work for the UN. I never knew I would be in the media field. So, let's see what future holds for me.

What is sex in your perspective?
Hmm. (In Nepal’s context it should come only after marriage. . .). So I would say it is the most natural thing: the most adored way for the continuation of human species or for any other species. It is the only way for the continuation of life in the world.

What do have say about Sex before marriage?
Well, looking at our country's tradition and culture I would say NOOOO..

How would you define a life?
It's really hard to express in words. I think for me its my moms, dad’s wish & grant ( with laugh, obvious) Well , full of surprises, hurdles, challenges, goodies, happiness, resulting to different experiences, it’s quite a thing. What do you say?

What do you want to do in your Leisure time?
Oh! Just hang out with friends, spend time with family. Read books, T.V. Shopping.

Have you thought of doing something different apart from RJing/ VJing ?
Well media is quite a package; I have acted in a movie recently. That makes me an actor I guess!

What makes your really happy?
I get happy when things work out according to my plan. The other thing that always brings big smile on my face is when I do shoping, shopping & shoppppppppping

It seem like you have found lots of ways to keep yourself happy, is there anything that makes you unhappy?
Of course when my loved ones suffer, it’s not just dukha it becomes mega dukha

Do you have any suggestion for the people who are dreaming to make their career in RJ / VJ?
You should really know how to talk correctly according to the situations thrown at you. For that you need to read a lot as it’s the only way to fuel yourself with knowledge and confidence. Be passionate about it. At the end of day you got to be Jack of all, Master of RJing / VJing

What do you have to say abut the current situation of the country?
Is there anything to say? .
Anyway.. Lets be optimistic, no matter what.

Dark as night and nearly as long, Christopher Nolan’s new Batman movie feels like a beginning and something of an end. Pitched at the divide between art and industry, poetry and entertainment, it goes darker and deeper than any Hollywood movie of its comic-book kind — including “Batman Begins,” Mr. Nolan’s 2005 pleasurably moody resurrection of the series — largely by embracing an ambivalence that at first glance might be mistaken for pessimism. But no work filled with such thrilling moments of pure cinema can be rightly branded pessimistic, even a postheroic superhero movie like “The Dark Knight.”

Apparently, truth, justice and the American way don’t cut it anymore. That may not fully explain why the last Superman took a nose dive (“Superman Returns,” if not for long), but I think it helps get at why, like other recent ambiguous American heroes, both supermen and super-spies, the new Batman soared. Talent played a considerable part in Mr. Nolan’s Bat restoration, naturally, as did his seriousness of purpose. He brought a gravitas to the superhero that wiped away the camp and kitsch that had shrouded Batman in cobwebs. It helped that Christian Bale, a reluctant smiler whose sharply planed face looks as if it had been carved with a chisel, slid into Bruce Wayne’s insouciance as easily as he did Batman’s suit.

The new Batman movie isn’t a radical overhaul like its predecessor, which is to be expected of a film with a large price tag (well north of $100 million) and major studio expectations (worldwide domination or bust). Instead, like other filmmakers who’ve successfully reworked genre staples, Mr. Nolan has found a way to make Batman relevant to his time — meaning, to ours — investing him with shadows that remind you of the character’s troubled beginning but without lingering mustiness. That’s nothing new, but what is surprising, actually startling, is that in “The Dark Knight,” which picks up the story after the first film ends, Mr. Nolan has turned Batman (again played by the sturdy, stoic Mr. Bale) into a villain’s sidekick.

We’ve grown accustomed to expecting surprises from Pixar, but “Wall-E” surely breaks new ground. It gives us a G-rated, computer-generated cartoon vision of our own potential extinction. It’s not the only film lately to engage this somber theme. As the earth heats up, the vanishing of humanity has become something of a hot topic, a preoccupation shared by directors like Steven Spielberg (“A.I.”), Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”), M. Night Shyamalan (“The Happening”) and Werner Herzog. In his recent documentary “Encounters at the End of the World” Mr. Herzog muses that “the human presence on this planet is not really sustainable,” a sentiment that is voiced, almost verbatim, in the second half of “Wall-E.” When the whimsical techies at Pixar and a moody German auteur are sending out the same message, it may be time to pay attention.

That old, half-forgotten musical, with its Jerry Herman lyrics crooned by, among others, Louis Armstrong, is also among Wall-E’s mementos of, well, us. He is a dented little workhorse who, having outlasted his planned obsolescence, spends his days in the Sisyphean, mechanical labor of gathering and compacting garbage. His name is an acronym for Waste Allocation Load Lifter- Earth Class. But not everything he finds is trash to Wall-E. In the rusty metal hulk where he and the cockroach take shelter from dust storms, he keeps a carefully sorted collection of treasures, including Zippo lighters, nuts and bolts, and a Rubik’s Cube.

Maybe there is on one in this world who doesn’t believe in kismet but for that single reason you can’t blame or over emphasize the issue of kismet. But the story of the film depicts little more.

Just like any other Bollywod flick, in this film also, Raj (Shahi Kapoor) and Priya (Vidya Balan) meet each other. But despite feeling love for each other the only thing they develop for each other is pure hatred. But see the kismet connection hidden in such a chemistry which turns bad luck of Raj, who has been fighting for getting a better work for last five years in the field of Architecture, into a good one. Raj comes to his fortune teller Hassena Banu Jaan (Juhi Chawla) and describes everything to her. Banu tells him that Priya is his lucky charm and for a better future he should always take her with him to wherever he goes for his job. Raj agrees on it and takes Priya to a meeting with Batra & Gill, a company that wants to construct a shopping mall. But soon Raj comes to know that the proposed mall is going to be made by demolishing Priya’s community centre. Priya helps Raj without having any idea about what’s going on. But as soon as Raj gets the project, the reality comes into open for Priya. For the sake of love Raj proposes Gill (Om Puri) for building the combination of shopping mall and community center but Gill denies it. At the end of the story Priya’s kismet helps Raj once again and Mr. Batra (Boman Irani), friend to Priya and partner of Batra & Gill, accepts Raj’s proposal of making the shopping mall beside the community centre.

Shahid must remember that audience’s expectation regarding his characters in films has touched the sky after the success of Jab We Met and he must accept films keeping that in mind only. At the same time he must avoid playing the stereotype characters. On the other hand Vidya has tried her best to live the life of her character but unfortunately the character, especially her outfits, hasn’t suit her level best. I guess she must not attempt this kind of characters. Juhi Chawla is excellent in the character of Hassena Bano but the lose bangle in her hand made audience think about possibilities that forced her wearing it. Few scenes with Vidya made us realize like Juhi’s jewelries are put on Vidya. Om Puri and Boman Irani are good as usual. Himani Shivpuri proved with two scenes that character maybe small but it has to be strong. There is nothing to talk about other characters of the film. Despite its length of 2 and half an hour, the film seemed longer and unusually slow. Aziz Mirza has chosen beautiful locations but he better has understood that beautiful locations cannot make beautiful films. Music and lyrics are not to the marks.

Expectations of watching a good film may drag a lot of audiences to the theatre but they better know in advance that the film has nothing extraordinary to offer the audience. People will surely fail to connect to the film, if not to the stars.

When Rotlu, Jiggy, Bombs and Shaleen offer to tell Mala the tale of Jai and Aditi-a match made in the pastry shop of heaven - Mala is convinced that she is in for yet another clichéd love story with joys and sorrows, happiness and heartbreak, laughter and songs, fights... and a climax at the airport.

And indeed, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na is all of that. And more!

Meet Jai Singh Rathore ('Rats'), the most non-violent Rajput either side of the Aravallis. And meet, if you dare, the violent and passionate Aditi Mahant ('Meow'). Whatever you do, do not pick a fight with her. She scratches. And abuses. If you do get into a scrap, take cover till Jai arrives, as he alone can calm our snarling wildcat.

Never was there a less likely couple. Jai thinks Aditi's parents should have rinsed her mouth with soap when she was a child. Aditi thinks that Jai is the biggest coward she has ever encountered. Heaven, it seems, has mixed up its apples and oranges.

More nuts in this fruitcake scenario: Rotlu weeps secretly for Aditi. Bombs' heart explodes for Jai. Jiggy applies golden mascara to his hair. Shaleen… well, she's probably the only one who doesn't seem a few notes short of a concerto.

So, to come back to our story: Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other (in some odd, distorted way, impossible to understand). Friends know this. Parents know this. Everybody knows this. But do Rats and Meow know?

What's their manager like? Big Phil, Luiz Felipe Scolari, has a very good record, and he knows it. Won 2002 World Cup with Brazil, took Portugal to Euro 2004 final and 2006 World Cup semi-final. Much-coveted.
Based in Britain? Ronaldo, Nani (Man Utd), Ferreira, Bosingwa, Carvalho (all Chelsea).
What's their pedigree? Improving. 2004 Finalists.

Who is their key player? Michael Ballack, 31, has two Champions League finals and two World Cup semi-finals behind him but Germany's driving force still lacks a major winner's medal.

What's their manager like? Joachim Löw was billed as the coaching brain behind Jürgen Klinsmann's brio. He took over after the World Cup.

What's their manager like? Wily. Sexagenarian Dutchman Leo Beenhakker has coached in eight countries and frightened England with Trindad & Tobago in last World Cup.

What's their manager like? Principled. Fired prior to Euro 2000 finals for standing up to Gheorghe Hagi, Victor Piturca returned to oversee Romania's first qualification since, twice outsmarting the Dutch en route.
Based in Britain? Niculae (Inverness Caledonian Thistle).
What's their pedigree? Thin. Reached the last eight in 2000.
And their 2008 form? Improving. Lost to Israel, but since beat Russia and Montenegro.
What are their chances? Slight, but they have the talent to upset one of the big three.

What's their manager like? Shrewd. German Otto Rehhagel emphasises defence and teamwork. Not pretty, but effective.
Based in Britain? Samaras (Man City, loaned to Celtic). Giannakopoulos has left Bolton.
What's their pedigree? Impeccable. They are the holders – but have only qualified twice, going out in the group stage in 1980.
And their 2008 form? Dipped. After beating the Czechs, Finland, Portugal and Cyprus they lost to Hungary and were held by Armenia.
What are their chances? Eighth in the world and in a weak draw, but no longer unknowns. Quarter-finals but no more, surely.

RUSSIA (24)
Who is their key player? Konstantin Zyryanov (Zenit St Petersburg). The holding midfielder and reigning Russian player of the year has a crucial role as Andrei Arshavin will miss first two matches.
And their rising star? Igor Akinfeyev (CSKA Moscow, 22) Young for a 'keeper but already a seasoned pro. CSKA captain.
What's their manager like? Cunning. Dutchman Guus Hiddink picks the right jobs, and usually executes his task well.
Based in Britain? None.
What's their pedigree? Won inaugural competition in 1960, finalists in 1964, 1972, 1988.
And their 2008 form? Well beaten by Romania but have since defeated Kazakhstan, Serbia and Liechtenstein.
What are their chances? Hamstrung. As well as playmaker Arshavin being out, striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is injured for the first match. By then their defence may have been exposed.
What should be their Euro 2008 anthem? "Help!", The Beatles.

SPAIN (4)
Who is their key player? Marcos Senna (Villarreal). Spain will score goals, with or without Torres, but unless the naturalised Brazilian protects the back four even Iker Casillas may concede.
And their rising star? David Silva (Valencia, 22). Canary Islander who caught the eye at Chelsea last season and is now making a splash internationally.
What's their manager like? Irascible. Luis Aragones, 69, does not care for others' opinions, as Raul, Thierry Henry, Joaquin, the Spanish federation and numerous journalists have discovered.
Based in Britain? Reina, Torres, Arbeloa, Alonso (all Liverpool), Fabregas (Arsenal).
What's their pedigree? Winners in 1964, finalists in 1984.
And their 2008 form? Outstanding. Unbeaten for 16 months in 2008 they have beaten France, Italy, Peru and the US. But only by the odd goal each time.
What are their chances? Always contenders, always fall short. Will qualify, but likely to have to beat the Group of Death's top two to reach final.

SWEDEN (29)
Who is their key player? Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Internazionale). Unpredictable genius who has all the tools except consistency.
And their rising star? Sebastian Larsson (Birmingham, 22). Youngest player in the squad, the talented midfielder has the chance to put relegation behind him.
What's their manager like? Sober. Lars Lagerback began as co-coach in 2000, has been on his own since 2004, and always qualifies. Very organised.
Based in Britain? Isaksson (Man Ctiy), Ljungberg (West Ham), Larsson (Birmingham), Granqvist (Wigan, on loan to Helsingborgs).
What's their pedigree? Mundane. Semi-finals, on home soil, in 1992.
And their 2008 form? Average. Beat Costa Rica and Slovenia, lost to US, Brazil, Ukraine.
What are their chances? Experienced, but unless Ibrahimovic is fit and refreshed after injury they will struggle to get out of the group.
